Sadly, my lovely Triumph Speed master 865 has a well known fault in its design which if it rears it's ugly head, is catastrophic if it all goes wrong!
From what I have heard and read, it is all down to the strength of a boss in the casting of the lower crankcase half that holds the gear assembly to do with the starter motor. Apparently, if you get a kickback whilst starting the bike, the force exerted on the drive train from the starter to the clutch is stronger than the aluminium casting. It breaks and your lower crankcase is probably scrap? They are too dear, if you can get one, and means a full engine rebuild. Effectively, your motorbike is beyond economical repair and many consider them as scrap!
Luckily, a company called Triumph Twin Power, (TTP) have made a small device that you can fit into the clutch housing and it dramatically adds strength to the chosen area. It has so far proven popular with owners of this model and similar versions of the bike and very effective. I decided I would get one and fit one to my bike. You can see it in the picture the curved silver looking object.
I started at about 10.30 am and by about 1.00 pm it was fitted but it has to stay untouched for 24 hours to allow the "glue" that holds it in place to set and fully cure. The reassembly will start tomorrow and only time will tell...
In due course I intend to write out the full procedure for other users in my situation as the instructions/guides found on the internet are really for people who are used to getting there hands dirty in engines. I haven't done anything like this in over thirty years and I have, to be honest, found it very stressful!
Luckily, I have a couple of good mates that I could call on and use as main help or backup.
