What a way to start the holiday season... going to Tenerife with the wife and some cracking friends, Ian and Michelle.Location? Hotel Los Gigantes in Puerto Santiago to the north west of the island. (See photo below). The weather when we left was actually mild for the time of the year but it was still a pleasant shock to wake up next morning in Tenerife to blue skies and 19c at 8.00am! The weather peaked around 32c all week long which was not what we were expecting...

We flew from East Midlands, which is by far and away my favourite airport for so many reasons, namely, easy to get to, cheap easy access parking on site, small compact and bijou compared to the likes of Birmingham and Manchester and the people there are really friendly and helpful!

Not the best of flights I have to admit, (I hate flying, in fact I hate travelling believe it or not!) at over six foot and a little on the portly side plane seats

are a squash and this is getting harder as I get older and stiffer joints!

If you look at the pictures you will see we hired a car for the day and toured the island and what a pleasant place it is too. Mount Teide is a must... it's still classed as an active volcano and its the second highest volcano in the world apparently! just drive up there and have a good look at the place its quite spectacular. Loro Park is worth a visit on the North of the Island and there

are plenty of beaches with the unusual sight of black volcanic sand!

The hotel was 4 stars and I have to admit having been in other 4 star hotels this one was the best by far, we really dropped on a good one here. The 'all inclusive' food and amenities were frankly superb and the pools were saltwater, at nearly bath temperature. Great for soothing out those 'post flight' aching joints, I can truly recommend it!

Would we go back there again? Definitely as it was a very enjoyable week. Would we spend a fortnight there? Probably but like all islands you are a captive audience and it may feel restricted. Saying that buses and Taxi's are plentiful and cheap once you work out the logic behind them. Taxis are for short distances and a full car of people. Buses are for longer journeys as they work out cheaper, especially with a travel pass obtainable in local shops. Also if its just the two of you the balance between a taxi and a bus becomes less as the prices merge. Taxi's are far quicker from A-B!

Travel safe... Moriarty
